5 ways to successfully pack toiletry and cosmetic items for international travel!

All international flights now require every traveller to place all liquids, gels and aerosols into a clear resealable bag and this must be placed separately in a bin on the conveyor belt of x-ray machines in clear sight of security officers.

1st successful decision – research your country of departure and arrival

Every country is slightly different in their security measures.  Most countries have websites with information on security measures.  For a list of regulations in several countries click here. clarityclear_hotel.JPG

2nd successful decision – find a travel bag that complies with international regulations

You are looking for a travel bag that

  • is no larger than 20cm x 20cm
  • is completely transparent
  • must be independently resealable (sticky tape, rubber bands, ribbons will not be accepted).
  • writing or logos appear no more than 4cm from the base of the bag.

3rd successful decision – know what you can place inside the bag

  • Check all containers are less than 100ml or 100grams.  Transfer product from larger containers into a smaller travel size bottles or jars.
  • Anything that is a liquid, gel or aerosol must go into the bag.  Some examples include liquid foundations, mascara, lip balms, toothpaste. (If finding 100gs or less toothpaste is a challenge, try a healthfood store.)  Read more....
  • Liquid based foods are not allowed but solid foods are acceptable.  Read more.....

4th successful decision – comply with airline regulations completely

That tube of your favourite moisturising face cream even though not full and you’ve rolled it up to half size is still 150g.  It doesn’t comply with regulations and you’ll be asked to part with the tube.  A friend had to part with her costly cosmetics because they did not comply with regulations.  The truth is no one likes to throw away perfectly good cosmetics because they are already in customs at the scanning machine and have a bottle greater than 100ml or tube larger than 100grams.

5th successful decision -  keep your clear travel bag for liquids, gels and creams only

Carry small portions of your products in your travel bag.  Place larger containers into your check-in luggage.  Remember to place these items into a sealed bag in case they leak through your luggage.  It is important to note that if your check-in luggage gets lost then your travel pack will give you access to your cosmetic and toiletry items in the interim. Some examples of items that do not need to be in the compliant clear travel bag but can be placed in your carry-on luggage.

  • Toothbrush
  • Pencil eye liners
  • Pencil lip liners
  • Powder foundations
  • Powder eye shadows

Don’t wait until you’re about to walk through the scanner at the airport!  Give yourself peace of mind that you will easily comply with airline carry-on luggage restrictions.
